FLACSHWF 2016: It's a Wrap!

FLACS I'S 6TH ANNUAL
GARDENING, HEALTH & WELLNESS FORUM WRAP UP
Last Saturday was FLACS I’s 6th Annual Gardening, Health, and Wellness Forum. It was a day filled with conversation, gardening, and exercise. The forum concluded with a healthy lunch prepared by Chef Bennett and the FLACS Café. If you were unable to make it don’t worry, we got you covered. Here are a few announcements and highlights gathered from the event.
The forum began with Chef Bennett and soon to be Registered Dietician Michiko Tomioka leading the group in discussions on the importance of having a balanced diet and what it means to be healthy. Our panelists also followed up the discussion with their own insights on health and wellness.
As the Bronx continues to promote being #not62, Urban and Community Gardens have sprung all over the city. Panelists from La Finca Del Sur and the Edible Academy provided us with information about programs available to the community on learning how to grow your own produce and details on how to lease your own garden bed. Be sure to check out some of their local produce this summer at the South Bronx Farmer’s Market's Grand Opening on June 18th. They will be located near our FLACS 2 and FLACS 3 schools. The farmer’s market will also be a participant of NYC’s Health Bucks Program, which means more fresh food for your buck. As an added incentive to stop on by, our FLACS Cooking Club has been invited to do a possible cooking demonstration for their Grand Opening. Stay tuned for more details.
Fit 4 Life NYC and Ms. Johanny Comas (Zumba instructor) also reminded us that health and wellness is about being physically active too. They explained that there are no excuses when it comes to incorporating fitness in our daily lives. As a community we need to encourage constant movement and promote an active and fit lifestyle.
Health and Wellness are paramount to who we are as a school. We feel we are well on our way of being #not62 and hope you share the information that we learned at the forum with others. Join us in growing more, eating well, and staying fit.
For those who missed the event this year there is always next year's 7th Annual Gardening, Health & Wellness Forum.
